Dola, Jhanu to fight for gold; Mangal Singh bags bronze
Jamshedpur, Nov 10 (UNI) India's hope for gold in women's recurve and compound events remained alive with Dola Banerjee and Jhanu Hansda as both entered the finals, while in men's recurve Mangal Singh managed to bag bronze as Tarundeep Rai bowed out on the penultimate day of the 2nd Commonwealth Archery Championship here today.
Dola outclassed compatriot Reena Kumari in the semifinal by 100-97 points to face Englland Naomi Folkard in tomorrow's final.
Folkard also beat her compatriot Alison Willamson 106-98 points in the semifinal. Willamson got bronze defeating India's Reena Kumari 103-100 points.
But in the men's recurve Arjuna awardee Tarundeep Rai could not justify his talent as he lost to Australian Chris Lewkowski in the semifinal while in the other semis Mangal Singh lost to Scotland's Simon Needham.
The fight for bronze was settled between two Indians Tarundeep and Mangal but the latter clinched it by 106-103 points.
In the women's compound individual event two Indian women Jhanu Hansda and Manjudha Soy would lock horn for gold and silver tomorrow. In the semifinal Jhanu scored 115 points over England's Unda Garner (107 points), while Manjudha also came England's Andera Gales by 112-107 points.
Gales, however, beat compatriot Garner to settle for the bronze.
In the men's compound individual event, New Zealand's Stephen Thomasclifton and Scotland's Andrew Ward entered the final, while England's Steve Dixon got bronze medal today.
