Vigorous NE monsoon brings widespread rains to TN
Chennai, Nov 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu continued to experience widespread rain under the influence of a vigorous north-east monsoon, with all major reservoirs brimming to full capacity.
According to the weather office here, the trough of low pressure over south-west and adjoining west-central Bay off Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coast was persisting for the third day today.
Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu during the next 48 hrs.
The weather in Chennai city and its neighbourhood would be generally cloudy with one or two showers or thundershowers, the weather office said.
Meanwhile, Avinashi recorded a very heavy rainfall of 11 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs today.
Tuticorin recorded nine cm, followed by Sivagiri, Sivakasi eight each, Tiruchendur and Thuckalay seven cm each, Chembarambakkam and Arakonam six cm each, Chennai Airport, Tambaram and Maduranthagam five cm each, Sattur and Virudhunagar four cm each, Chidambaram, Panruti, Gingee, Muthupet, Vanthavasi and Melur three cm each.
Meanwhile, copious rainfall in catchment areas of Chennai city led to heavy inflow in resevoirs. While the storage level in Poondi reservoir was 2295 mcft against its full capacity of 3231 mcft, the water level in Chembarambakkam was 2,236 mcft against the full capacity of 3120 mcft. Red Hills had a storage level of 2189 mcft against the full capacity of 3,300 mcft, PWD sources said.
