Smuggler arrested with 5 kg heroin
Amritsar, Nov 9 (UNI) The Special Narcotics Cell of the Punjab Police today seized five kg heroin and arrested two people, including a notorious smuggler who had escaped from the custody of the Delhi police in July last year.
The heroin which was smuggled from Pakistan was worth Rs five crore in the international market.
Giving details here Narcotics Cell SP Makhan Singh said the seizure was made near Sultanwind village on the oukskirts of the city. He said a team of the Cell on a tip-off intercepted two motrcycle-boorne youths.
On searching a bag being carried by one, the team found the heroin. Later on questioning, it was found that one of those taken into custody by the Special Cell team was Paramjit Singh Pamma, a resident of Havelia village, who was wanted in numerious trans-border crimes including smuggling of heroin, RDX and arms. His colleague was identified as Resham Singh, who is also a well known drug smuggler.
Mr Makhan Singh said Pamma was arrested earlier last year with nine kg heroin by the Punjab Police. He escaped from the custody of the Delhi police in July last year when he was being taken to the national capital in connection with the seizure of another heroin consignment.
The SP said during the phase of militancy in Punjab, Pamma used to smuggle arms and ammunition and even at times RDX alongwith heroin from Pakistan through the Jammu border. In the 1970s, he was actively involved in smuggling of gold from Pakistan, because in those days the yellow metal was far cheaper across the border and fetched a good price on this side of the border.
Both Pamma and Resham hade been booked under the NDPS Act.
