Patil announces study committee for atrocity cases

Mumbai, Nov 9 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today said a study committee headed by a retired High Court Judge would be formed to study as to why there was no conviction in atrocity cases.

Mr Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the government would soon take steps to speed up such matters.

The announcement to this effect was made after a delegation, led by Republican Party of India (RPI) MP Ramdas Athavale and Social Welfare Minister Chandrakant Handore, today called on Mr Patil in the backdrop of Khairlanji incident in which four members of a dalit family were killed.

The Minister told reporters the police have so far arrested 44 people in connection with the killings and the case will be heard by a fast track court.
