Guyana Prez seeks Indian help in IT sector

Georgetown, Guyana, Nov 9: Guyana President Bharat Jagdev has urged India to extend all possible cooperation to his country in the field of Information Technology to help it become economically independent.

Talking to Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, on a goodwill visit here, Mr Jagdev said the people of Guyana had a lot of expectations from India and they believed the country would not let them down.

''India is one of the leading countries in the Information Technology sector,'' the President said, adding the country wanted to work in tandem with India in the field.

India has helped Guyana build a cricket stadium here, which is set to host the World Cup next year. Mr Jagdev inaugurated the stadium here yesterday.

''The move will help to strengthen the ties between the two countries,'' the President said, while saying his thanks to India.

Supporting India's bid for a place in the Security Council, he said pertaining to the country's role in facilitating world peace India should be tasked with the Council's responsibility.

Mr Shekhawat's three-day visit to Guyana culminated today.

During his visit, both the countries signed four new pacts.

India also agreed to provide aid to the country for devlopmental activities, besides cooperation in the economic and cultural areas.

Mr Shekhawat also inaugurated Rabidranath Tagore Research Centre in Guyana University. He suggested the country to avail itself of educational and cultural programmes offered by India which are meant for the developing nations. India offers scholorships to 3,000 students under the programme.

The Vice-President is now headed for Trininad and Tobago.
