Father walks out free, son held guilty

Mumbai, Nov 9 (UNI) In the first instance of its kind during the ongoing delivery of judgement in the 1993 serial Mumbai blasts case, a father was acquitted while his son held guilty.

Five father-son pairs had been arrested in connection with the 1993 serial blasts and, and as per the judgement delivered till now, three father-son pairs have been convicted, while the father of the convicted Memon brothers died during the trials. As regards the fifth pair, the court has convicted the father while the fate of the son is yet to be decided.

Today, TADA court judge P D Kode today convicted Zameer Qadri while acquitting his father, 65-year-old Sayyed Quadri. The pair had stood accused for concealing a cache of arms and ammunition and later dumping it at Dighi village in Raigad district prior to the 1993 blasts.

This was the first instance when the father walked out free while the son has been convicted.

In the first instance of the Memon brothers, their father Razaak Memon passed away during the trials. Yakub Memon and his two brothers were convicted by court.

In the second instance, the father-son duo of Dawood Phanse and his son Sarfaraz Phanse were convicted for their role in the arms landing at Dighi.

The court, however, has yet to decide the fate of Majeed Parkar although his father Sharif Parkar has been held guilty.

Likewise, the TADA court has convicted the father-son duo of Shahnawaz Hajwani and Sikandar Hajwani.
