Devote more attention to law and order: CM

Chennai, Nov 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today exhorted the top police brass to devote more attention to maintain the law and order situation in vulnerable places in the State.

Chairing a high-level meeting with top police officials to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the State, he directed the police to intensify patrolling in vulnerable areas in the city and other places.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Karunanidhi said the law and order situation in the state was satisfactory. But it could be maintained in a much better manner, he added.

The meeting was held in the backdrop of two broad daylight murders that took place in the city.

He said the police force would be strengthened by inducting more police personnel to maintain law and order in the city.

Like Chennai city, hi-tech patrol cars, which were given to the City police by Hyundai as part of modernisation and upgradation, would also be given to police in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Salem and Tirunelveli Corporations.

The Hyundai company had promised to give cars for these Corportions also to maintain law and order, he added.

Director General of Police D Mukherjee, Chennai City Police Commissioner Letika Saran and other senior officials of the police department attended the meeting held at the state secretariat prior to the state cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, following an anonymous letter found at Trichy airport, threatening to blow up airports in Tamil Nadu and Kerala yesterday using car bombs, the police have intensified the vehicular checks at strategic points in the city.

Speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of a function, Ms Letika Saran said adequate police personnel have been deployed at various points in the city to carry out intensive vehicular checks.

All the cars entering the airport were subjected to thorough checks, she said.

Strict vigil was being maintained at the entry and exit points in crowded places like Egmore and Central railway stations. Mobile patrol parties were also directed to intensify patrolling and keep an eye on all vantage points, she added.
