Women undertrials: HC orders notice to K'taka Govt, police
Bangalore, Nov 8 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today ordered issue of emergency notices to the Karnataka Government and police on a public interest litigation, seeking adequate facilities, escorts and speedy trial for women undertrial prisoners in the State.
Admitting the PIL filed by the Committee Against Violence On Women, represented by Ms Sushma of Bangalore, Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Mr Justice H G Ramesh issued the notices.
The petitioner contended that prisons in the State were overflowing with prisoners. Bangalore housed about 175 women undertrials while it could accommodate only 72. Many of the prisoners had not been produced in court even once, she submitted.
