UN team discusses counter terrorism measures taken by India

New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) A United Nations team deliberated with the Indian government about the measures taken to contain terrorism.

The UN team held talks with the Home Ministry officials and intelligence agencies about the steps taken by the country facing insurgency and terrorism in various parts.

They also discussed how the customs and immigration officials were identifying undesirable cargo and people in the border areas and measures taken to regulate the inflow of people, Home Ministry sources told UNI today.

The two sides also deliberated the training module adopted for customs officials to make them effectively discharge their role in fighting terrorism. Modern scientific methods to check terrorism also came up for discussion at the talks.

Appropriate technology to detect materials in containers and use of machine-readable passports were recommended for checking terrorists who heavily depend on forged travel documents to execut their nefarious designs.

The Indian side apprised the UN team of the border fencing programme being undertaken in both Western and Eastern sectors of the country.

The UN, which has adopted a resolution to take measures to control global terrorism, has sent its expert team to the sub-continent, which is a hot-bed of terrorism for an on the spot assessment of the situation. The team also held discussion with External Affairs Ministry on the issue.

The UN team is going to Mumbai tomorrow from where they would go to Pakistan. It would make a study report about counter-terrorism measures taken by various countries so that the best practices adopted by one country could be recommended for replication by other terrorism affected countries.
