RMC to organise Heritage Walk to attract tourists

Rajkot, Nov 8 (UNI) The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) here is all set to organise a Heritage Walk beginning from November eleven in a bid to woo the tourists.

RMC Mayor Dhansukh Bhanderi told UNI the Walk would cover 2.5 km walk around the city and will cover 21 heritage spots in a span of two hours, besides making people aware of the architectural heritage and the founder of the city.

Vibhoji Jadeja, the ruler of Sardhar, built the city on the west bank of Aaji in 1608 AD. The city got its name in memory of a Sandhi called Raju about 400 years ago.

''It is said that Raju Sandhi was a close friend of Vibhoji and the city is named in his fond memory,'' said Mr Bhadhari.

In 1820, the British Agency was established here, which came under the colonial rule with the British gaining ascendancy.

The Mayor said the RMC wanted to spruce up every such spot in the city and make it presentable to the tourists as the state is celebrating 2006 as 'Tourism Year.'' He said leading citizens would be invited to join the walk.

Later, the Walk would be conducted on every Sunday. The RMC was also planning three other walks such as Colonial, Gandhian and Religious.
