Heavy rains continue to wreack havoc in TN

Chennai, Nov 8 (UNI) Heavy rains, under the influence of the vigorous north-east monsoon, continued to wreak havoc in Tamil Nadu, inundating low-lying areas and affecting normal life.

Yesterday's trough of low pressure over south-west and adjoining west-central Bay off Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coast still persists, Weather Office here said.

Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. sporadic rains are likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hrs.

The weather in Chennai city and its neighbourhood would be generally cloudy with a few spells of shower or thundershower, heavy at times in some areas.

Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram district recorded a very heavy rainfall of 14 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hours today.

Sriperumbudur recorded nine cm of rainfall, followed by Walajapet, Usilampatti and Marungapuri seven each, Chembarambakkam, Illuppur and Arakonam six each, Chennai Airport, Tambaram and Maduranthagam five each, Sattur and Virudhunagar four each, Chidambaram, Panruti Gingee, Muthupet, Vanthavasi and Melur three each.

Meanwhile, PWD officials issued a third and final warning to people living along the banks of Vaigai river as the dam level reached 69 feet against the maximum level of 71 feet this morning.

Due to copious rainfall in the catchment areas, the inflow was 4,055 cusecs which was being discharged into irrigation channels and into the Vaigai river.
