HC guidelines for admission to pvt medical co

Chennai, Nov 8: (UNI) Madras High Court has framed guidelines for admission of students to private medical colleges coming under the Tamil Nadu Private Medical Colleges Association for the year 2007-08.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice K Chandru framed the guidelines while disposing off petitions from Dr Raja Muthiah Chettiyar Charitable and Educational Trust running Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute in Kanchipuram District, and PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research, Coimbatore.

It allowed three petitions from candidates seeking a seat in first year MBBS and dismissed a petition, and appeal from one R Shyamala.

The bench said the schedule prescribed by the admission committee /competent authority should be followed without deviation.

If colleges were selecting based on option/preference of candidates, it should be mentioned in the prospectus and application. Deadline for admission after every stage of selection should be given and a waiting list prepared and published. If any candidate does not join before the deadline, candidates from the waiting list must be considered for the admission.

The bench said, as most complaints were about candidates not having cash or the colleges refusing to receive payment by cheque, arrangements must be made for online transmission of money via by banks. This would provide safety to both parties.

The bench was informed that the Tamil Nadu Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of admission and determination of fee) Act, 2006, for regulating admissions and fees for professional colleges was awaiting the assent of the President.

If the Act came into force, admissions for the next academic year would be governed by the guidelines issued by the committee appointed under the Act and the committee constituted pursuant to the Islamic Academy case would cease to exist, the bench added.
