Heavy rains in TN disrupt normal life

Chennai, Nov 7 (UNI) With the north-east monsoon being vigorous, heavy rains continued to lash Tamil Nadu, inundating several low-lying areas and disrupting normal life.

Weather officer here said a trough of low pressure was lying over south-west and adjoining west-central bay off Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coast.

Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over south Tamil Nadu and at many places over north Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during next 48 hours.

In Chennai city and neighbourhood, the weather would be generally cloudy with few spells of shower or thundershower, heavy at times in some areas, the Met office said.

Sulur and Avinashi (both Coimbatore district) recorded a very heavy rainfall of 13 cm each during the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs today.

Periyanaickanpalayam, Tiruppuvanam and Srivilliputhur recorded 12 cm each, followed by Srivaikuntam and Tiruchendur 11 each, Sivakasi 10 cm, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Peraiyur, Kangeyam, Nagercoil nine cm each, Erode and Bhavanisagar eight each, Madurai Airport, Sankarankoil, Ambasamudram, Rajapalayam and Konni seven each.

Chennai city and its suburbs also experienced spells of heavy rainfall, leading to water-logging of streets and traffic snarls.
