Small bomb destroys car in Beirut, no casualties

BEIRUT, Nov 5 (Reuters) A small explosive charge today blew up outside a police station in a Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of Beirut, destroying one car and damaging others but causing no casualties, police said.

The blast in Tareek al-Jadidah was the latest in a series of small attacks to hit mainly Sunni districts of the Lebanese capital over the past four weeks.

No group has claimed responsibility for any of the attacks and police have not announced any arrests.

The latest attack came on the eve of talks between Lebanon's rival leaders aimed at defusing a political crisis threatening to plunge the country into chaos.

Lebanon was shaken by a string of high profile political assassinations and bombings last year, including the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

Hariri's murder, being investigated by the United Nations, led to the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon in April 2005.
