SC directs ASG to discuss ragging menace with government
New Delhi, Nov 6 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the Additional Solicitor General, Gopal Subramanium to seek instructions from the government on the issue of setting up of a committee to suggest remedial measures to check and control the menace of ragging in educational institutions.
A Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta also directed the ASG to discuss the matter within three weeks with the government and get back to this Court.
The name of former CBI director R K Raghavan was suggested for the chairmanship of the proposed committee. The court also directed to discuss the name of Raghavan with the authorities and tell the Court whether his name was acceptable to the government or not.
It may be noted here that the Apex Court had already banned ragging in 2001 although the menace is still continuing and freshers are sometimes brutally tortured and harassed by the seniors in the name of ragging.
The Court also took exception to those above 40 years of age continuing as student leaders by taking admissions in various educational institutions.
