Cong leaders asked to desist from statements against IUML
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 6 (UNI) The Congress in Kerala today asked its leaders to desist from making public statements against the Indian Union Muslim League, a constituent of the United Democratic Front (UDF).
KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala told mediapersons here the direction was issued in the wake of the controversy over certain remarks made by party leaders Aryadan Mohammed and K K Ramachandran.
Mr Aryadan Mohammed's remarks on growing extremism and IUML's alleged failure to make sincere efforts to check extremist elements had caused ripples in the Opposition combine.
Mr Chennithala said IUML was also part of efforts being made by the Congress to fight extremist elements. It was thanks to the stand taken by the IUML in the aftermath of the demolition of the Babri Masjid that there were no communal clashes in Kerala, he noted.
The Congress party's campaign against extremism should not be targeted at any constituent of the UDF. It should unite all parties that protect national integrity and secularism, he added.
