2nd Commonwealth Archery Championship begins from Nov 8

Jamshedpur, Nov 6 (UNI) The second Commonwealth Archery Championship will be held at JRD Tata sports complex here from November 8 to 11.

The championship would be organised by Archery Association of India (AAI) under the aegis of FITA and Commonwealth Games Federation and hosted by Tata Steel in association with AAI and Jharkhand Archery Association (JAA).

Vice-Chairman of Organising Committee and vice president of JAA Sajiv Paul said about 120 archers and officials from 10 commonwealth countries - Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Malaysia, Northern Ireland, Bangladesh, Wales, Scotland and India would be taking part in the championship.

Paul said the first Commonwealth Archery Championship was also held in India (New Delhi) way back in 1993 and Australia became champions while Limbaram won silver for India.

He said this Championship would also be significant as India is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 at New Delhi and a meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation would be held on November 15 in Malayasia to decide the inclusion of archery in the New Delhi Games.

Arjun awardee and general secretary of JAA Sanjeeva Singh said India could win gold in both Recurve and Compound categories.

He said in the individual events of men's and women's Recurve category Jayanta Talukdar and Chekrovolu Swuro are expected to win medals while Jhanu Hansda and Paltan Hansda in the Compound category of men's and women's section are also a good prospect to win medals.

In the team event of men's Recurve section India would be fighting for the gold with England whereas in the Compound section England, Australia and Malayasia would be the strong contenders.But in the women's team event India would lockhorn with England for Gold,Mr Singh said.

Jharkahnd Chief Minister Madhu Koda would inaugurate the Championship.
