10 killed in serial blasts at Guwahati
Guwahati, Nov 5: The ULFA last night rocked Guwahati with twin blasts killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 30, leaving behind a trail of destruction and bringing back horror to the capital city.
Police sources confirmed that the blasts were carried out by ULFA, and the bombs were kept in two separate bicycles. Both the bombs went off simultaneously around 1835 hours. The Fancy bazaar bomb was more lethal.
The eye witness said six people, including the owner of the tea stall where the bomb was planted, were killed on the spot and two more reported dead in the Guwahati Medical College(GMC).
Severed limbs and bloods as well as decomposed bodies were seen strewn all over the bomb blast site.
In the other blast at Pathhar Kuwari at the outskirts of the city, two people were killed and three others injured. This is the first ever bomb blast by ULFA at Fancy bazaar, the commercial hub of the North East and the epicentre of ULFA's extortion drive.
Guwahati SSP Nitul Gogoi confirmed that both the blasts were carried out by ULFA and a red alert has been sounded in the city, sealing all the exit points.
Chief Secretary S K Kabilan has called an emergent Unified Command meeting tomorrow to review the situation as the business district is planning to close down the shops tomorrow.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is now in New Delhi, reviewed the law and order situation with the top brass of the Asom Police.
The Police viewed the bomb blast as direct retaliation to the killing of Swaran Majhi, the second most important commander of the ULFA' strike force 28th battalion by the security forces two days back at Moran.
The injured were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital as the entire Fancy bazaar looked like a bombed zone with hundreds of vehicles seen trying to escape from the scene only to face huge traffic jam. In fact, the traffic movement in the entire Guwahati city literally came to a halt.
