Govt. moots rural banks to help farmers
Kohima, Nov 05 (UNI) While celebrating 2006 as the 'Year of the Farmers', the Nagaland government is mulling to introduce more rural bank branches to provide easy credit facilities to the farmers.
State Agriculture Production Commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir had recently announced this at the two-day state level training programme for farmers on Micro-Irrigation System at Dimapur, organised by the Irrigation department and Flood Control, where the farmers were made aware of the latest technologies on improved farming.
He said the State Agriculture Committee would discuss about the opening of the new branches in its ensuing meeting to be held soon.
He also said it is not feasible for the government to render financial assistance to each and every farmer.
He also added that Rural Banks with nominal interest rate could boost farmers' productivity.
Emphasising that state's resources do not commensurate with the ever-increasing population growth, he urged the farmers to make best use of the land resources by adopting modern technology and applying the knowledge they have earned during the training.
