UPA will make India 'the workshop of world': PM

Sriperumbudur, Nov 4: Remarking that Brand India had begun to make its mark on the world stage, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the UPA Government would do all that was required to realise the goal of making India 'the workshop of the world.' Laying the foundation stone for the Rs 470-crore Global Automotive Research at Oragadam near here, he said both Indian and foreign firms were contributing to make India an automotive and industrial powerhouse and a global manufacturing hub.

He said the Indian automotive sector had entered the ''brave new world'' of globalisation.

''Just two decades ago, most industries were anxious that our industrial and trade policies would hurt their prospects. We still remember the range of automobile models that we could choose from 30 years ago. However, by demostrating its flexibility in responding to customer needs, its ability to meet the challenge of competition, its drive to meet global standards and its ambition to be second to none, our automotive industry has become successful beyond expectations,'' he added.

Describing the Indian automobile industry as a ''beautiful butterfly'' which had come out of its protective cocoon, Dr Singh said it was now showing its wares across continents.

It had done so with virtually no state subsidy or support and based on a transparent system of taxation, pricing and technology development, he said.

Stating that the automotive sector was a sunrise sector in the Indian economy, the Prime Minister said it had grown impressively to carve out a seven per cent share in the global market.
