TIFR don awarded Ramanujam Prize at ICTP
Hyderabad, Nov 4 (UNI) Ramdorai Sujatha of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has been awarded the Srinivasa Ramanujam Prize-2006 by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) for Young Mathematician from developing countries.
Dr Sujatha received all her education in India and has been with TIFR since 1985, where she is now an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics.
The Prize is awarded to Dr Sujatha in recognition of her work on the arithmetic of algebraic varieties and her substantial contributions to non-commutative Iwasawa theory.
In particular, together with Coates, Fukaya, Kato, and Venjakob, she formulated a non-commutative version of the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory, which now drives much of the work in this important subject.
The award ceremony, to be held at ICTP at Trieste in Italy on December 18, 2006, will also feature the 2006 Abel Laureate, Professor Lennart Carleson of the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, who will hand over the prize to Dr Sujatha.
The ICTP last year established the Srinivasa Ramanujan Prize, named after the Indian mathematics genius. The Prize is to be awarded annually to a mathematician under 45.
