Pak team to participate in Surjit hockey
Jalandhar, Nov 4 (UNI) As many as 20 teams, including a Pakistani team, would participate in the 23rd Indian Oil All India Surjit Hockey Tournament scheduled to be played here from November 6 to 15.
While 14 teams will participate in the Men's section six teams will play in the Women's section, a Surjit Hockey Society spokesman said here today.
He said that 11 teams including defending champions India Oil Corporation, Mumbai, will play directly in the Super League round while three teams would play in the initial knockout round to compete for one berth in the super league. Corps of Signals, EME Jalandhar and Sports Authority of India would play in the knockout round and one of these three teams would qualify for a berth in the super league.
Indian Oil Corporation, Railway Coach Factory(RCF), Kapurthala, Border Security Force, Jalandhar, Bharat Petroleum, Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF), Delhi, Namdhari XI, Punjab Police, Punjab National Bank, Delhi, Air India, Punjab and Sindh Bank Delhi and Shadman Hockey Club, Rawalpindi would be grouped in four pools for the super league. They will be joined by the qualifying team.
In the Women's section RCF Kapurthala, Central Railway, Pepsu XI, Northen Railway, Western Railway and Chandigarh XI would participate.
While Kukoo Walia would be Umpire Manager, Haribudh Singh Bawa would be Tournament Director.
Besides trophies, winner of the Men's section would get cash prize of Rs one lakh and winner in the Women section would get cash reward of Rs 31,000.
