1st case in Domestic Violence Act

Visakhapatnam, Nov 4: Shobharani, the wife of a Railway Protection Force constable, has become the first woman in this city to lodge a complaint against her husband under the new Domestic Violence Act.

The 30-year-old woman alleged harassment for the past 10 years and involvement of her husband K Ganesh Kumar in extra-marital affairs. She sought a Rs five lakh maintenance.

When the case came up today, District First Additional Magistrate D Chiranjeevulu ordered an urgent notice to the Assistant Public Prosecutor seeking information whether any Protection Officer had been appointed under the Act. He said the new Act required constructive analysis.

Shobharani's advocate K Muralidhar said police would serve notice on the respondent.
