UNFCCC certifies MSPL as a major green power producer in India

Mumbai, Nov 3 (UNI) MSPL, the single largest installed wind power generator in India, has emerged as the world's largest wind energy producer in terms of capacity that registered with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

UNFCCC is an international treaty working towards global warming reduction and most countries are members of the treaty.

''The registration from UNFCCC would enable the company to generate maximum 2.5 million certified reductions (CERs) from the developing countries under the Clean Development Mechanism(CDM),'' said Mr Shrenik Baldota, Executive Director of MSPL in his interaction with the media here today.

Further, he said, ''This is a rare multistone that would result in earning by selling carbon credit valued between Rs 200-250 crore in the next 10 years.'' Carbon credit is all about certificates issued to countries that help reduce greenhouse gases and the concept became popular with the Kyoto Protocol coming into force in Febrauary last year. It spells out individual emission limits for member companies and as per the current pricing for one carbon credit, Indian companies can earn US$ 3 billion by 2010 on a very conservative estimate.

The UN body conferred the prestigious registration to the MSPL's 125 MW wind power project in Karnataka which was constructed under the global norms with an investment of Rs 575 crore, according to Mr Baldota.

This green project activity would replace conventional energy equivalent to 356.83 million units and thereby reduce emission of Green House Gases (GHG) to the tune of 25,32,400 ton CO2 over a 10-year project crediting period. In the absence of the project activity, the above energy would have been sourced from combustion of fossil fuels like coal, gas or oil resulting in equivalent GHG emissions.

Replying to a question, Mr Baldota said the company's success would encourage other players to venture into this sector. ''We will be adding 50 MW of wind farm every year and reach 300 MW and power by 2008,'' said he responding to a query.

Elucidating on carbon credit mechanism, Mr Baldota said the Kyoto Protocol allows industrialized countries to meet their commitments through domestic actions, trading among themselves and buying CERs from the developing countries under the CDMs.
