Teacher sentenced to 14 years imprisonment

Rourkela, Nov 3: Rourkela Additional District Judge (Track Court) Sobhan Kumar Das has sentenced a school teacher to 14-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 40,000 holding him guilty of raping a minor school girl.

The judge, who convicted Solman Tirkey, pronounced his judgment yesterday awarding ten-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 and in default, another one year under Section 376 Indian Penal Code The teacher was also sentenced to four-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 and in default another six-month rigorous imprisonment under Section 366 Indian Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, Sulaman Tirkey, a teacher in Birkera M E School, took a minor girl student of that school on November 25 last year on his scooter to Vedavyas Souare on the pretext of purchasing a pair of dress for her.

He then proceeded to Rourkela, where they took food but on their way back home in the evening, Sulman took the minor girl to Dalakudar jungle and raped her.

When the girl protested to the action of the teacher, the latter threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter and left her in the hostel.

On receipt of the complaint from the girl, police arrested the teacher and sent him for trial in the court.
