New police act to be framed soon:Shivraj

Jalandhar, Nov 3 (UNI) Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today said that a new police act would be framed in all states within the deadline given by the Supreme Court.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Patil said that the Supreme Court had directed that new Police acts be framed by January 2007 to make the police force more people friendly and efficient.

He said that accordingly the Centre had asked the state governments to do the needful and states were working in the direction.

A committee headed by former Attorney General Soli Sorabhji was set up to frame a broad draft of the act and the Supreme Court had also praised the working of the committee.

He said that state governments were asked to make suitable additions and alterations, as per their local needs, in the act.

Mr Patil said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also giving much importance and priority to the formation of the new act.
