More than 1 PAN illegal: IT Official
Vijayawada, Nov 3 (UNI) Having more than one permanent account number PAN card was illegal and liable for cancellation, Vijayawada Income Tax Commissioner R C Pramanik today said.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Pramanik said the department had taken measures to ensure each assessee had only one PAN card.
The IT Department had so far found 1.26 lakh duplicate PAN cards with 57,000 assessees in Andhra Pradesh. He warned any person having more than one such card should inform the Assessing officers surrendering the PANs which they do not want before December 31 this year.
Failure to do so would entail action including rendering the PAN non-operative and collection of penalty from the asseessee.
Mr Pramanik said 98 per cent of Form 15 G collected by the banks from depositors for not deducting tax at source were not filled up properly making them invalid.
The Department had informed the banks in this connection, he added.
He said a help centre on e-filing of IT returns will be opened tomorrow to render necessary assistance and advice to the assessees.
