Heroin seized at Chennai Airport

Chennai, Nov 3 (UNI) Officials of Air Intelligence Unit of Airport Customs arrested a passenger for carrying 400 gm of heroin worth Rs 40 lakh at the security lounge of Chennai Airport here.

The passenger Jalil Bazirali was destined for Male via Colombo by a Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

In a statement here today, Commissioner of Customs Chennai Airport C Rajan said the passenger hailing from Pudducherry was nervous while questioning and his answers were contradictory. On persistent interrogation, Mr Jalil admitted to have secreted 100 capsules of narcotic substance in his body by swallowing.

He ejected 101 capsules and each contained four gm narcotic substance packed in polythene and taped with yellow colour adhesive.

Upon testing with the Narcotic Drug Detection Kit, the substance tested positive for heroin.

This is the second such case detected by the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs this year.

The passenger, who had a work permit for Maldives, was arrested yesterday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

In the last three such seizures, the offenders were found to be making frequent trips to Maldives, ostensibly for business purposes.
