DMK unleashed violence to ensure win in Chennai: AIADMK MLA
Tiruchirapalli, Nov 3 (UNI) Incarcerated AIADMK MLA P K Sekhar Babu today accused the ruling DMK of unleashing violence in the recent civic polls in Tamil Nadu to ensure Chennai was a DMK bastion.
Sekhar Babu, arrested by Chennai Police under Explosive Substances Act on October 15, (on charges of attempting to destabilize local body polls) and let out on bail by the Principal Sessions Judge, Chengalpattu, on November one on condition that he should stay at Tiruchirapalli and report at Tiruchirapalli Cantonment Police Station every morning, told UNI, the DMK Government had misused official machinery and indulged in large-scale malpractices on polling day, with money, muscle power and police support.
He said in the 13th Assembly polls to the state, the AIADMK had shattered the illusion created by the DMK that Chennai was its stronghold, by winning seven Assembly constituencies of the total nine seats contested. The winning percentage was 80 per cent. The DMK had won just six assembly seats of the total 13 seats had contested and registered a winning percentage of 40 per cent. The AIADMK's landslide victory was due to its good administration during its previous five year rule by sorting out peoples' problems instantly. AIADMK supremo and former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha had handled natural disasters like tsunami, floods, heavy rains and drought in an effective manner during her regime.
Unable to tolerate the AIADMK's 'victory' and fearing defeat, the DMK staged violence with hired henchmen at various places, besides lathi-charge and foisting false cases against the opposition by police. If civic polls had been held fairly, the AIADMK would have captured all 155 wards in Chennai City Corporation, he added.
Earlier, accompanied by his partymen, Sekhar Babu appeared before the Cantonment Police Station, as per the court direction.
