Chhattisgarh, Railway girls storm into final

Lucknow, Nov 3 (UNI) Chhattisgarh and Railways girls stormed into the final of the 21st Federation Cup Handball Championship for men and women being played here at the K D Singh Babu Stadium.

Earlier, Railways team entered the final beating Karnataka 15-5 in a one-sided match, while Chhattisgarh team had already qualified for the final.

Hosts Uttar Pradesh girls will clash with Maharashtra for the third place.

Today, UP girls beat Delhi in a close encounter 18-15. At the breather, UP was leading 9-4. The main contributors for the winners were Ankita (8) and Sunita (7). Neetu Singh netted five times for Delhi.

In the men's category, the final position will be clear only after tomorrow morning session matches between Karnataka-CISF and Chhattisgarh vs Madhya Pradesh of group 'A'.

However, CRPF and UP were on first and second positions respectively till now.

Today, CRPF got the top position after an easy encounter against Gujarat (29-21). Although UP -- in an another match -- faced defeat in the hands of CRPF, still they claimed second spot.

The 12th West Zone Men and women National Handball Championship was inaugurated by UP sports minister R K Chaudhary.

On the inaugural day, UP girls in a hard fought match beat Uttaranchal by a solitary goal earning full points and Chhattisgarh thrashed Gujarat, while in the lone game of the day in the men's section, MP outsmarted Uttaranchal 23-7.
