Centre grants Rs 206 cr to Rajasthan for water quality improvemen

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) The Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs 206 crore in grants-in-aid for tackling water quality problems in rural habitations of Rajasthan.

The sanction, made under the Centrally Sponsored Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP), is meant for ten new projects, 41 ongoing projects and also for taking up 16 major projects for providing safe drinking water including supply of domestic defluoridation filters in 1000 habitations.

The state Government has to provide a matching share for implementation of the projects. Community contribution of Rs.8.89 lakh is also to be collected for the ten new projects sanctioned by the state government in 2006-07.

States have been requested to delegate powers for management of rural water supply schemes through the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) as per the Constitution of India. As such, operation and maintenance of the completed schemes should be transferred to the PRIs.
