HC upholds 10 yrs RI for rape of infant

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) The Delhi High Court has upheld the conviction by the Sessions Court of a person who was arrested on the spot while raping a 10-month-old child on January 25, 1999 in Dabri area of West Delhi.

Justice J M Malik rejected the appeal of Lalu Singh and affirmed the punishment of 10 years imprisonment saying the offence was serious and gruesome.

Additional Public Prosecutor O P Saxena opposed the plea of the convict submitting that it was a serious crime and reduction in punishment would not meet the end of justice.

Counsel Amit Bhanot appearing for Singh pleaded that the convict had been in jail for more than seven years and had two children.

Singh, a worker in private factory, had committed the crime when he was 27 year old.

The medical report also confirmed the rape of the infant, said Mr Saxena said while pleading for maximum punishment.
