EC hopeful of 100 per cent photo I-cards for Punjab polls

Amritsar, Nov 2 (UNI) The Election Commission today expressed the hope that 100 per cent target of making photo identity cards for the coming Punjab Assembly elections would be achieved before the polls.

Informing this at a press conference here, Election Commissioner Naveen B Chawla said 73 per cent photo I-cards of the voters had been made till today while the drive was continuing to achieve the target before the polling took place.

Mr Chawla said the full bench of the Election Commission would visit the state before the polling to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections in free and fair manner.

The Election Commissioner earlier held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of the Jalandhar Division from ten districts of Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Nawanshahar and Hoshiarpur to review the preparations for the Assembly elections, due in February next year.

Mr Chawla said he had also asked the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sundaram Krishna to ensure early disposal of the legal cases related to violation of the model code of conduct.
