Centre sanctions Rs 150 crore for Freedom strugglerelated events
New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) The Union Cabinet tonight sanctioned a sum of Rs 150 crores for the commemoration of 150th anniversary of First War of Independence and three other major events connected with India's Freedom struggle.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram told mediapersons after a meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, that the amount was also meant for the celebration of 60th anniversary of Indian Independence , Centenary celebration of adoption of Vande Mataram as National Song and the 75th anniversary of the Martyrdom and Birth centenary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
He said the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence would be celebrated during May 2007 to May 2008, while the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence would be observed during August 2007-August 2008.
Mr Chidambaram said a Special Cell would be set up in the Ministry of Culture for taking steps for the commemoration of these events.
A Joint Secretary would head the Special Cell.
The cabinet also approved creation of the post of Joint Secretary from the IAS cadre.
