100-year-old woman undergoes successful gall bladder surgery

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) In a first of its kind, a 100-year old woman has successfully undergone gall bladder laparoscopic surgery in a city hospital here.

Ms Gowardhan Kaur, who suffered acute pain due to multiple gallstones, underwent the surgery on October 27 at the Apollo Hospital.

It was Ms Kaur's perseverance which convinced Dr Arun Prasad, Senior Consultant Surgeon at the hospital to perform the surgery.

''I was extremely reluctant to do the surgery because of the patient's age. I had recommended her son, himself a practicing doctor, to put her on pain killers...,'' he said.

The patient's medical tests allayed all apprehensions of Dr Prasad.

Ms Kaur's medical tests showed that she had a perfectly normal heart, lungs, liver and kidneys which could put someone half her age to shame.

''She told me that age cannot be a discriminate factor to lead a perfectly normal life...,'' said Dr Prasad After a thorough cardiac, anaesthetic and physician check up, a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy surgery was performed on Ms Kaur.

She was discharged from the hospital on October 30 after being under post operative care for three days.

''Generally a person who undergoes this surgery is discharged in a day, but I wanted to be sure that Ms Kaur is perfectly fine,'' Dr Prasad said.

''She is back to her normal routine work now,'' he added.
