Indian mathematician to receive Ramanujan Prize

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) Noted mathematician Prof Ramdorai Sujatha, of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, has been selected for this year's Ramanujan Prize in recognition of her work on the ''arithmetic of algebraic varities'' and her substantial contributions to ''non-commutative Iwasawa theory.'' The award, worth 10,000 dollars, will be presented to Prof Sujatha by Lennart Carleson, the 2006 Abel Laureate, during a special ceremony at the Abdus Salman International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy on December 18.

Together with mathematicians of repute like Coates, Fukaya, Kato and Venjakob, she formulated a non-commutative version of the manin conjecture of Iwasawatheory, which now derives much of the work in this important subject.

Prof Sujatha received her education in India and has been with TIFR since 1985, where she is now Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics.

The prize, jointly suported by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters through the Abel Fund and the International Mathematical Union, carries the name of Srinivas Ramanujan, India's greatest mathematical genius of the 19th century. It was established to honour young mathematicians, who have conducted outstnding research in developing countries.

The Abel Fund was created in honour of great Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik AZbel.

''The prize, thus, links the names of two extraordinary mathematicians,'' says Prof K R Sreenivasan, Director, ICTP.
