BJP, Cong demand action against Mulayam govt
Lucknow, Nov 1 (UNI) Terming yesterday's violence during Uttar Pradesh nagar nigam poll as flouting of constitutional norms, the BJP and Congress today demanded stern action against the Mulayam Singh Yadav government.
While the BJP demanded imposition of President's rule in the state, the Congress posed that if the present situation in Uttar Pradesh was not fit for President's rule, then where else should it be enforced.
Leader of the opposition in the Assembly and BJP leader Lalji Tandon said here all constitutional norms had been broken by the ruling Samajwadi Party in yesterday's polling.
''If they can go to such an extent in the local bodies poll, then what will happen in the 2007 Assembly election,'' he questioned.
The BJP leader said they will meet the Governor to apprise him of the situation and would want him to send his report to the Centre about the entire situation against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh civic poll.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Salman Khurshid said state leaders were in touch with the high command and they would meet the President and Union Home Minister shivraj Patil to apprise them.
Asked why the Congress was not demanding for President's rule in UP the state he flatly commented that ''may be we do not need such demand after yesterday's violence.'' He claimed Governor T V Rajeswar had already sent two reports to the Centre about the two-phases of local bodies poll in Uttar Pradesh, while Congress MP Jiten Prasad had met party president Sonia Gandhi today at New Delhi to give her first hand information about the activities of the SP-led Mulayam government.
Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari claimed there is a constitutional breakdown in Uttar Pradesh by the present regime for not holding impartial poll.
''Violence and rigging by SP proves they have lost people's faith and are now only trying to be in power by force,'' he observed.
