ASI smashes two-year-old to death

Chandigarh, Nov 1 (UNI) A two-year-old boy died after being battered by a police official following an argument with the child's uncle over the ongoing Champions Trophy, police today said.

Punjab police Assistant Sub-inspector Malkiat Lal, a distant relative of Gurpreet Bhagat, the father of the deceased child Lovepreet, was on a visit to the family here.

According to police, Lal had heated exchanges with Lovepreet's uncle Sandeep over the performance of various teams in the ongoing cricket event, which led to a scuffle.

An enranged ASI suddenly picked up the child sitting nearby and repeatedly smashed his head against the floor till he fell unconscious.

Lovepreet was rushed to nearby Government hospital where he succumbed to internal head injuries late last night.

Police said that the accused fled the scene and got admitted to the PGI after inflicting injuries upon himself. The police registered a case under section 302 of the IPC against the accused ASI.
