Vijayawada, Oct 31 (UNI) The election of a new mayor for the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), slated for today was deferred till tomorrow.

Talking to UNI here today, Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner Natrajan Gulzar said the postponement was caused due to Krishna District Collector Navin Mittal being held up in Machilipatnam, following floods in the town for the last two days due to torrential rain.

The State Election Commission (SEC) has appointed Mr Mittal for conducting the election.

Mr Gulzar said the decision to postpone the election was intimated to the SEC. Earlier, the SEC had fixed today as the date for election of a new mayor.

The election had become necessary in the wake of the resignation of Tadi Sakuntala of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on October nine after completing her one-year tenure. She quit the post as part of a pre-poll arrangement between the CPI and the Congress during the Municipal Corporation election held last year.

A special meeting of the general body of the VMC was convened today to facilitate the conduct of election.
