Sonia for time-bound construction of dams

Chandigarh, Oct 31 (UNI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi has shown a keen interest in the early and time-bound construction of dams at Kishau, Renuka, Lakhwar and Vyasi, Haryana Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said today.

Ms Gandhi has asked for the comments of the concerned Union Ministry on the actual status of these dams, said Capt Yadav who met the Congress chief recently in New Delhi and apprised her of the acute shortage of water in the southern parts of Haryana.

She assured him to take up the issue with the Union Water Resource Minister Saifudin Soz for their construction in a time bound manner.

Capt Yadav said he had apprised the Congress President and Mr Soz in separate meetings that there was only 14 MAF water available in Haryana against the requirement of 35 MAF.

As a result of this, southern districts of Haryana such as Mahendergarh, Rewari, Jhajjar and Bhiwani were lying dry and vying with each other for even drinking water.

He said a meeting had already been held with the Yamuna basin states of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi regarding construction of these dams and these states had agreed to construct a number of dams for the storage and the proper distribution of water.
