New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) The toll from dengue in Delhi today rose to 65 with six more people succumbing to the deadly virus in the past 24 hrs, even as officials claimed the disease was showing a 'downward trend' in the Capital.

With 58 new cases reported the total figure of those affected by dengue spiralled to 2,640. Among these 1,621 were from Delhi.

Of the six who died today, two -- Pramod Kumar (44) and Maya (60) -- were from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), two from St Stephen's Hospital and one each from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

At AIIMS, 24 new patients were admitted to the dengue ward, taking the total number of affected patients in the hospital to 187, even as 20 others were discharged in the past 24 hours.

Another 20-odd people were under observation, said AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr D K Sharma who maintained that dengue cases were showing a downward trend and maybe by the weekend be seen no more.

''The two death reported today were actually 'casualty deaths', meaning they died within hours of their admission to the hospital after being admitted in a serious condition.'' They were not from those undergoing treatment, he added.
