93 year old observe santhara in Jaipur

Jaipur, Oct 31: In yet another case of santhara death ninetythree- year- old Kheladevi Heerawat of Jaipur died after 61 days of fasting.

According to family sources Kheladevi, a resident of Johari Bazar area in the city, yesterday night breathed her last after observing 'santhara' for the last sixty-one days. The last rites of Kheladevi would be held here today.

Santhara, a Jaini tradition of voluntarily accepting the religious practice of fasting unto death has been in the news after a series of such deaths were reported from Rajasthan. Some organisations has approached the court for stopping this practise as it amounted to mercy killing which is banned in India.
