New Delhi, Oct 31: The MCD today approached the Supreme Court seeking extension of time for 40,000 odd traders who have filed affidavits in the apex court giving an undertaking that they would close down their shops located in residential areas of Delhi by June 30, 2006 but the deadline was extended to October 31, 2006 by the court in view of the festival season.

The MCD in its application filed today has expressed that those traders who have filed affidavits but are protected by the notification stated September 7 and 15, 2006 should be allowed to continue subject to the condition that they would file fresh affidavits latest by January 31, 2007 giving an undertaking that they would stop the mis-users if the two notifications are quashed as invalid by the Supreme Court. Traders protected by the notification on 2183 roads in the city number around 3500 out of 40814 traders who have given affidavits.

The MCD has, however, submitted that sealing operations against remaining about 5000 traders who are not protected by the notification shall, however, be resumed as per the orders of the court dated September 29, 2006.

The sealing operations in the city are not going to be resumed from tomorrow i.e. November 1 2006 as even the SC-appointed monitoring committee has also requested to consider the case of 40,000 odd traders on whose head the sword of sealing is hanging dangerously.

The application of the MCD is likely to come up for hearing either this week or on coming Monday.
