K'taka Govt asked to rehabilitate Hipparagi barrage displaced
Bangalore, Oct 31 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly N Dharam Singh today urged the State Government to quickly respond to the demands of those likely to be displaced by the Hipparagi Barrage irrigation project, being built across river Krishna in Belgaum district.
In a statement here, he said the proposed project would submerge 17 villages in Athani and four villages in Raibag taluks in Belgaum district and three villages in Jamakhandi taluk in Bijapur district.
The Congress leader said the inhabitants of the villages facing the threat of backwaters have resorted to a relay hunger strike, demanding that the State Government take up immediate rehabilitation works. The issue was also raised in the recently-concluded special session of both the Houses of the Karnataka Legislature. The rehabilitation works should be taken up immediately on the lines of the Upper Krishna Project without wasting any time, he added.
