In future no big dams in Uttarakhand: N D Tiwari

Hardwar, Oct 31 (UNI) Uttaranchal Chief Minister N D Tiwari has said in future no big dams would be constructed in the state.

Mr Tiwari was inaugurating a five-day Jan Suchana (Public Information campaign) of the Central Government at Bahadrabad, near Hardwar last evening.

Due to the controversies created by Tehri dam, the government has decided not to construct big dams since the construction of these dams create many problems, including that of rehabilitation of the oustees.

"In the case of big dams the main purpose is lost in the vortex of controversies generated by these dams." He said in future we shall construct medium size and small dams to generate hydro-electricity for which Uttarakhand had great potential. "The construction of the small dams create minimum possible problems of resettlement of evacuees and these problems can easily be resolved." Mr Tiwari also announced that Hinduja Brothers would donate Rs 25 crores for the Ved Mandir of the Uttaranchal Sanskrit University Hardwar. "It would help in modernizing and updating the university and making it a centre of excellence for higher studies and research in the classical language." UNI XC LL MIR KP1247
