Elite school defends government grant of Rs 5 crore
New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) While defending governmment grants of Rs five crore, the Sanskriti School said sufficient number of people from the weaker section of the society did not come forward to put their children in the institute, set up by the wives of the capital's top bureaucrats of Delhi.
Submitting an application before a division bench of acting Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Kailash Gambhir, School Principal Gauri Ishwaran said sufficient number of children from the weaker sections of society had not came forward for admission during the current academic session.
Out of the 126 students admitted in nursery in the current session, 72 are the wards of government servants, 37 from the general category and 17 from the weaker sections, said the affidavit filed on October 19.
Most of the students from the weaker sections are the wards of the school employees.
The School admitted that Rs two crore and Rs three crore in 1995-96 and 1996-97 respectively had been sanctioned by Director, Department of School Education and Literacy Kamal Choudhury for the constuction of buildings.
On June 21, 1995 while considering a proposal of the Department of Personnel and Trainning (DOPT), the government decided to set up the school for the children of the transferrable officials in the country, said the affidavit.
The school was set up by a society formed by the wives of the top bureaucrats and the wife of Cabinet Secretary is the President of the governing body.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a news report, the Court had issued notices to the government and the school regarding sanctioning of more funds.
Rejecting the arguments that the grant of Rs 10 crore extended to Sanskriti School was towards the capital expenses, the court asserted that government resources should be made available firstly to the weaker sections of society.
