TN rain toll at 39

Chennai, Oct 30 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today said 39 people had so far died in various rain-related incidents since the onset of the North-East Monsoon in the state.

With the monsoon becoming vigorous, several districts had been experiencing heavy rainfall. As many as 39 people had died in rain-related mishaps like wall collapse, electrocution and uprooting of trees from October 1 to 29, an official release here said.

On instruction of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the solatium extended to the families of rain victims had been enhanced from Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000.

Those who suffered serious injuries would get a compensation of Rs 10,000.

The Chief Minister had directed State Ministers, representatives of local bodies and officials to undertake immediate relief measures, the release added.
