Prem Sagar Jain commits suicide

Chandigarh, Oct 30 (UNI) Former Chandigar Bharatiya Janata Party president Prem Sagar Jain allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at his home here this morning, police sources said.

The BJP leader's body was found in his bedroom with a bullet piercing his right temple. Prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Yadav said.

The sources said Mr Jain shot himself with a Webley Scot licensed revolver. He died instantaneously at around 0940 hrs. His body is being sent for postmortem examination. The cause of suicide was being ascertained and a team from the Central Forensic Science laboratory also visited the spot.

The SSP said that according to family members, Jain had been depressed from some time.

Later in the evening, the mortal remains of Jain were consigned to flames. BJP national Legal Cell Convenor Satya Pal Jain, Chandigarh BJP president Yash Pal Mahajan, former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan and Chandigarh Mayor Surender Singh were among the hundreds of supporters who attended the last funeral of the departed leader.

A condolence meeting was held at the party office here and the Party flag was lowered as a mark of respect to the late UT party chief. He contested the Punjab assembly election from Kharar constituency in 1967 and held the post of Chandigarh BJP president for a long period.
