Patkar, Prabhu enter into 8th stage of women's MSTT championship

Pune, Oct 30 (UNI) Madhurika Patkar, the second seed from Thane, waged a grim battle to down junior international and eighth seed Divya Deshpande of Pune in an extended tussle 11-6, 11-7, 15-13, 6-11, 11-3 and entered into the last eight stage of the women's singles of the 68th Maharashtra State Table Tennis (MSTT) championship being played at the indoor hall of the Shiv Chhtarapati Sports City Ahalunge-Balewadi near here today.

In another tie, top seed Mamta Prabhu also of Thane defected sixth seed Ruma Roy of Mumbai Suburban District 12-10, 12-14, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5 and sailed into the last eight stage of the women's singles.

Joining the winners in the quarterfinals was tenth seed Malika Bhandarkar of Nagpur, who showed the exit door to the seventh seed Mrunayee Mhatre of Mumbai Suburbs in a fully-stretched struggle 7-11, 6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.

Junior international Martand Biniwale of Pune was in fine fettle as the lad assured his berth in the quarter-finals of the junior boys and the men's singles and put himself in line for a double.

Biniwale put it across Kunal Salunke of Thane 11-7, 10-12, 13-11, 11-7, 13-11 before making to the quarter-finals of the junior boys singles section. Continuing his fine showing, Biniwale, seeded eleventh, shocked eighth seed Swapnil Namjoshi of Thane in yet another tight tie at 8-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5.
