Mobile connectivity to reach NE border areas

Aizawl, Oct 30 (UNI) The Centre has decided to provide mobile connectivity to people living within the 10-km radius along the NE border areas, Senior BSNL officals said Department of Telecommunnications (DOT) under the Union Ministry of Communications has given green signal to the service providers to set up towers within 10-km radius along the region's international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The officials said service providers would first obtain mandatory clearances from DoT before erecting base towers.

The decision was taken this month after the Union ministry of Communications held meetings with senior bureaucrats in the Home and Defence Ministries in New Delhi about the necessary permissions for mobile connectivity in the area.

The DoT has clarified the mobile service providers that signals from base towers should not go to the neighbouring countries.

BSNL officials said if service providers were unable to restrict the signal, they should deploy radio transmitters whose signals fade away after a certain distance.

The Telecom Ministry also specified that no towers would be set up within 550 metres from the zero line.
